Basic Tips for Traveling With Your Dog
If you are preparing for a trip with your dog, you need to plan a few things before travel begins. You need to keep a few things in mind before you leave the house and settle into the vehicle for traveling distances. If you prepare your travels with these tips, you should have a fun vacation and be prepared for anything that may happen.
Things to Prepare You
- 1. When traveling with your dog, a crate might make them more comfortable. You can place a blanket or something they like to sleep with in with them toy keep them happy. You might even try the newest car seat harness that allows them to sit up and look out the window.
- 2. You want to bring along enough food to last the trip. You do not want to try a new dog food when you are on vacation and some areas might not carry your particular brand. This can cause upset to your dog's stomach, which can result in frequent stops for the bathroom.
- 3. You should take along enough water as well. Different areas have different water supplies. Some people cannot drink well water for instance; your dog may have the same problem. You are better off bringing your own water.
- 4. The water dish itself should be one you can use in the car as well. Your dog may have a thirst when traveling and need water while riding. This is just like you, when you need a drink to stay moist.
- 5. You will also need a first aid kit for the dog along with one for yourself. This is important when traveling. You can use a standard doggie first aid kit from any pet store.
- 6. Your dog needs to have collar with all the tags attached including rabies, licenses and a tag with your home information on as well. The identification tag with your information is in case he takes a trip of his own without you.
- 7. You want to take along enough toys to keep your dog happy. They may have favorite toys that will help keep them busy.
- 8. You will want to have a leash and collar, but also a spare set as well. You never know when you might lose one along the way.
- 9. Any medications your dog needs should be taken along as well. This might include flea medication, heartworm pills or even vitamins.
- 10. Always carry along tools for cleaning up after your dog. This includes a pooper-scooper or bags and paper toweling.
- 11. You will also want your grooming supplies and enough towels in case the dog takes a swim without your permission.
